Frequently Asked Questions

What is Kombucha?

Kombucha is a probiotic beverage made with black tea and probiotic S.C.O.B.Y. (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast) cultures.

What are the health benefits?

Where do we start? Kombucha is naturally antifungal, antibacterial and fights free radicals in your body. It can help lower cholesterol level, boosts your immune system, and radically improves your gut health. Tea contains anti-aging antioxidants that keep your cells healthy and your skin looking fabulous. Simply a feel good drink from the inside out! Get glowing!

What’s all in there?

We believe in keeping our ingredients simple and pure:

Filtered water, organic fair trade black tea, organic raw cane sugar, fruit, herbs, natural probiotic kombucha cultures. That’s it. No added fruit concentrates, sugars or artificial anything.

Are there added sugars?

Nope. After the natural fermentation process there are about 3 to 8 grams sugar per bottle left but we don’t add any sugar in the second fermentation.

Is kombucha just another new trend?

Actually, kombucha has been around for hundreds of years and has just recently found its way to Europe and the States. Sources claim the Chinese used kombucha in their medicine as they are famed for their quest for all manner of longevity elixirs. At that time it was called “The Tea of Immortality”, Cha is the Chinese word for tea. Other sources claim the tea to have originated in Ukraine and Russia. Wherever it may first have started, we at Scobi are glad it found the way to South Dakota.

Is Kombucha a good sports drink?

Absolutely! Fermented beverages like our booch contain minerals and electrolytes which makes it a perfect post-workout drink. All minerals and electrolytes are 100% natural which makes it a healthier alternative to manufactured commercial sports drinks.

Is Scobi ok with my diet?

Our kombucha is raw, vegan, gluten-free, and with no added sugars. Therefore it’s compliant with most diets including Paleo, Atkins, Vegan, Raw Foods and more. By the way: It makes happy hour happier: with only about 35 calories per serving, while alcohol contains 60-120.

What is that stuff floating in the bottle?

The stuff you see floating around in the kombucha is the SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast) which allows the tea to ferment and give it its nutritious properties. Don’t worry, it’s the proof of a live culture and absolutely normal.
